Pains and Gains

I knocked out another great week of workouts this week. Last night as I was thinking back over my week I was excited I hit every workout and aside from my pulled shoulder, I feel fantastic! But the week seemed light for some reason. Maybe it was the fact that my muscles were acclimating to Body Pump and not hurting so much.... But then as I was laying out my running clothes and reviewing last week's runs I realized why the week seemed light. I only got in 2 runs. E and I doubled up on Body Pump and running on Tuesday but then we were scheduled to run on Sunday so I took Friday as a rest day instead of getting in my 3rd run. Oh well - one missed workout but 6 solid days of exercise: I'll take it!

Today was my long run for the week and I split it into two runs: 3.5 miles with E and 3.5 miles with Lebihui. Once again, E surprised me by pulling out a 1.84 mile interval followed by one rest interval and a second 1.47 mile interval. E's doing so well I just might be able to convince her to train with me for a half-marathon next year. While we were running today we discussed her first running endeavor a few years ago with a beginner's running group that took 8 weeks to build up to 2 miles. She never made it to the 2 mile mark because her knees hurt too badly. But this time, because she's been doing all of the weight-lifting and tennis, she's killing it on 3.5 mile runs with no pain and we've only been running for 4 weeks. Yay again for cross-training!

As for my shoulder injury - I'm pretty sure this is the injury I've been trying to ignore for the last 5 months. I'm thinking I pulled something in January when I was trying to improve my pushups and unfortunately rest isn't taking care of the problem. I didn't feel anything during yoga or Body Pump but on Friday I woke up with a sore shoulder that spasmed every time I tried to extend my arm around shoulder height. Massaging my back and shoulder helped enough for me to be able to play tennis on Saturday but the pain has come back consistently when I start working out again so I think it's time to have a doctor check it out. Thankfully it's not impeding my running so no matter what else happens, I'll still be putting in the miles.
